Dubai: Sheikh Hamdan forms new student council with 16 pupils from private schools

Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum approved the formation of a new Dubai Student Council, including 16 students from 16 private schools in the emirate. 

“Minds that innovate, hearts that persevere, and a deep-rooted pride in the values that unite and inspire us”, Sheikh Hamdan said, asking the students to “continue to exemplify the qualities that define our nation’s youth”.

He gifted the council a copy of the book ‘Lessons from Life’ by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

With a personal message from the Dubai Crown Prince, he gifted the students the book which “captures the values that inspire, guide, and ignite the passion to achieve and make a difference”.

Diverse council

The new council comprises students ranging from Grade 9/Year 10 to Grade 12/Year 13. They representing six different curricula and nine nationalities and cultures, including Emiratis.

Serving as a voice for nearly 400,000 students across Dubai’s private education system, the council is made up of diverse individuals, to reflect the diverse nature of the emirate’s schools.

The students are eight males and eight females. The council also includes a student of determination.

From 90 private schools, 40 students were shortlisted. Then, final members of the council were selected through a rigorous and transparent process that included individual interviews and group activities.

Membership in the Council is valid for one academic year, with the option to renew for a second term, subject to performance and continuous fulfilment of eligibility criteria.

‘Significant responsibility, greater expectations’

“You are now the voice of students in Dubai,” the leader told the council. The students would contribute to the development of the education system by carrying out their peers ambitions, and expressing their ideas, he said.

The council will serve as a link between the student community and Dubai’s Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA).

Sheikh Hamdan, who also serves as the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, told the students: “Your responsibility is significant, but our expectations are even greater”.
